Devon Rex - About the Breed

The Devon Rex is one of the most unique and beloved cat breeds, known for its pixie-like face, large ears, and soft, wavy coat. These cats are full of personality and are often described as "dog-like" for their loyalty and playful nature.

They are highly intelligent, people-oriented, and thrive on companionship. Devons are known for their clown-like antics, kittenish energy, and love of snuggling, making them a delightful and entertaining addition to any household.

Breed Origin

The Devon Rex breed originated in Devon, England in the late 1950s. The first Devon Rex, a curly-coated kitten named Kirlee, was discovered in 1959 near an old tin mine in Buckfastleigh, Devon. Kirlee’s unique wavy coat was the result of a natural genetic mutation that differed from the Cornish Rex, another curly-coated breed that had appeared earlier in nearby Cornwall.

Breeders quickly recognized that Kirlee represented a distinct gene and began carefully developing the Devon Rex as a separate breed. The result is today’s affectionate, pixie-like cat with its soft, rippled coat, large ears, and playful temperament.

The Devon Rex was officially recognized as a breed in the 1960s and has since gained popularity worldwide for its endearing personality and unique appearance.
