About the Breed

The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds, famous for its bushy tail, tufted ears, and thick, luxurious coat. Despite their wild look, they are known for their gentle, affectionate, and dog-like personality. A true “gentle giant.”

  • Coat: Long, shaggy, water-resistant fur
  • Build: Large, sturdy frame with strong legs
  • Ears: Lynx-like tufts and large, alert shape
  • Tail: Long and plume-like
  • Face: Slightly square jaw and expressive eyes

Personality & Behavior

  • Affectionate but not clingy – loves to be near you
  • Playful and curious – even as adults!
  • Great with kids and other pets
  • Chirpy voice – they “trill” more than meow
  • Dog-like loyalty – many follow their humans around

Grooming & Maintenance

  • Brushing: 2–3 times a week (helps prevent tangles)
  • Bathing: Occasionally – their coat repels water
  • Claw trimming: Regular
  • Diet: High-protein diet to maintain body mass

Health & Common Issues

Maine Coons are a hardy breed but may be prone to:

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)
